I have always held the view that killing an animal for food is morally wrong due to having being brought up as a vegetarian. Although I will maintain this lifestyle for as long as I live, I have begun to understand why the majority of people find vegetarianism a mystery. Around two million land animals are slaughtered everyday in the UK alone to be devoured by humans #. Whether this is a surprise to you or not, this is a big proportion of livestock and there is bound to be millions of more animals being killed for the same reason in the rest of the world. Despite this fact, these two million animals will be fed to over two million mouths in the UK. If farmers had to cut down on how much meat they produce or completely stop it all together, they would not be able to sustain a good way of life due to poor income. It is like any other animals, for example, if a lion kills a zebra, is that not just the same as humans killing cows for instance? If livestock were to be set free into the wild, would they be able to survive? Some animals were born to hunt and other animals were born to be hunted, it is just part of life. However, I think eating eggs from free running hens is acceptable as hens lay eggs naturally through the duration of their lives. Taking and eating the hens eggs does not seem to bother or disrupt the hens which is one of the reasons why I think eating eggs is tolerable. People are obviously beginning o understand why buying free range eggs is so important as most supermarkets and grocery shops now sell them. Correspondingly, I feel it is okay to eat other dairy products produced from cows and goats that have been treated well but these types of products are more difficult to come across. A lot of vegetarians would agree that vegetarianism is just as healthy as a meat eaterââ¬â¢ s diet. We get all of our protein from diary products such as eggs and just the same as everybody else, we get our vitamins from fruit and vegetables. According to selected sources, vegetarians do not have a very healthy lifestyle at all. Apparently fruit and vegetables are contaminated with sewage, sludge, viruses and pesticides but arenââ¬â¢t all foods just the same? It has also been proven that being a vegetarian or eating vegetables do not increase or decrease the risk of colon cancer #. In fact eating too much meat gives you high cholesterol which contributes to cardiovascular disease. This can then result in heart attacks, strokes and sometimes leads to a much more serious disease #. Many people donââ¬â¢t realise the effects vegetarianism would or could have on the world as a whole and third world countries. billion people suffer from hunger and malnutrition in the world and over 40 million people die each year due to starvation ââ¬â most of which are children#. If people were fed this grain instead of the livestock the number of people who die of starvation and malnutrition would decrease dramatically and would make a big difference. This is how much vegetarianism could affect these third world countries. The last issue to discuss is ecology and the environment. It may sound bizarre but this issue plays and equally large part of how vegetarianism can make a difference to the environment. Raising animals for meat in the rainforest can lead to rainforest destruction. Since the 1960s, 25% of Americas rainforests have been burned and cleared to create pasture for beef cattle and the cattle are then made into hamburgers which destroys 55 square feet of tropical rainforest. Cattle also affect global warming as their gas is harmful to the atmosphere. To conclude, I fully appreciate both sides of vegetarianism. Vegetarians have as good a health as people who eat meat. They can obtain the vitamins and iron they need to have a healthy lifestyle just like meat eaters are able to do. Unfortunately so many people who eat meat do not realise what goes on behind the process of meat such as the abuse and mistreatment of animals before they are slaughtered. I believe that if this was revealed to people, a lot of people would convert to vegetarianism. Personally, although I have been a vegetarian all my life and have never tasted meat, I still think eating meat is erroneous and cruel but itââ¬â¢s something Iââ¬â¢ll just have to ignore.

The word was coined by British biological theorist Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book The Selfish Gene. Dawkins is an evolutionist. He argues that the human mind evolves in a manner similar to biological natural selection. He wanted a word similar to gene to describe the way ideas and beliefs spread and mutate. He bases the word meme on a Greek word meaning ââ¬Å"something imitated.â⬠We need a name for the new replicator, a noun that conveys the idea of a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation. He gives examples: Examples of memes are tunes, ideas, catch-phrases, clothes fashions, ways of making pots or of building arches. Just as genes propagate themselves in the gene pool by leaping from body to body via sperms or eggs, so memes propagate themselves in the meme pool by leaping from brain to brain via a process which, in the broad sense, can be called imitation. Hereââ¬â¢s the definition given in the OED: meme:à A cultural element or behavioural trait whose transmission and consequent persistence in a population, although occurring by non-genetic means (esp. imitation), is considered as analogous to the inheritance of a gene. The word meme and the idea behind it is itself a meme and has propagated a new branch of science called memetics. The new memeticists have expanded Dawkinsââ¬â¢ original definition and are not presently in total agreement as to what exactly meme means. Outside the scientific realm, the word meme is used to describe the replication of words, phrases, and ideas on the internet. In this context it refers to the item that ââ¬Å"goes viral.â⬠Scientists are also quick to compare the meme to a virus or a parasite. I question the wisdom of this method of explaining the action of the meme in a scientific context. It fosters a negative attitude towards the word that does not apply to its sister word gene. virus: fig. and in figurative contexts: a harmful or corrupting influence; (a form of) moral or intellectual perniciousness. Also in weakened use: a phenomenon liable to spread rapidly and pervasively. OED Memes, like genes, should be studied as objectively as possible. Current issues plaguing the profession are not allowed to taint what the past has meticulously built and endowed. The new generation nurses are then tasked to make sure the profession continue being regarded with esteem despite global problems. There have been accusations that the current nursing education does not produce enough competent nurses. Recent commercialization in the educational system owes to inconvenience this profession. Current diploma programs and associate nursing programs are offered as a shorter track to allow the resource pools to stretch faster. It is a common knowledge though, that the mastery of skills in the real world takes more time to adjust to the demands of practical full time nursing. Theoretical preparation however equips a practitioner the full understanding and applications of learning applicable to the actual practice. Education does play a central role into the nurses' profession but practice makes a better nurse. To address the issue of fast-track education which promotes incompetence, the different states have identified entry levels into the practice of professional nursing. The State of Texas and other states have identified licensed nursing practice along a continuum from the licensed vocational nurse to the doctorate prepared registered nurses. Vocational nurses are required to pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). Granted with a 90-day temporary permit, examinees are required to practice with direct supervision before allowance of a licensed practice. Baccalaureate degree holders, considered as articulate in the broader Nursing perspective are also required to take the NCLEX-RN and a 60-day temporary period while waiting testing and licensure. Other states have their own various rules and advisories however dwell on the same premise as the State of Texas and the rest. Considering that major employers for nurses are hospital- based institutions, the face of the nursing education is being monitored by the government to undergo face-lifts in their educational programs. Despite the widespread difficulties encountered, professional nursing practice is prevailed upon by the actual educational preparation of a nurse and her exposure to the technical nursing skills.
